Cardhalla Experience at Gen Con 13
I have been to a few Gen Cons in the past and one thing I look forward to every year is the Cardhalla display/ event. Cardhalla is an open card castle or tower building experience. Thousands upon thousands of gaming cards are donated (like Magic the Gathering CCG, Game of Thrones CCG, World of Warcraft TCG) and people are encouraged to dig in and build and build. It is all done for charity and at the end of the night on Saturday they auction it off, take donations, and then allow people to destroy it by throwing change at it till nothing is left standing.
Cardhalla is a charity event that has been held at Gen Con since 1999.During the convention, a city is constructed out of donated trading card gamecards. Near the end of the convention attendees are invited to throw coins at the city to destroy it. The thrown coins are collected and donated to charity. The motto is: “Build. Donate. Destroy.”

This clip was taken Friday morning and you can already tell that a lot of work had gone into building it up to this point. I am not sure how many cards in total were used for Cardhalla but it had to be close to half a million.
I was so excited to finally have a chance to see the end result of all the building and folding and stacking of all these gaming cards. It was shoulder to should standing room only for the ground floor. I was lucky to hold my phone up high enough to grab this video of the pre-event auction and festivities.
And there you have it folks. Three full days of planning, sorting, and stacking all gone in a matter of a few minutes. I was really impressed with how they made sure all the kids were up front and the first to get a chance to destroy it. Lots of fun and I can’t wait to see how big Cardhalla gets next year.
I regret not laying out in the middle of the destruction and making a playing card snow angel.
